Born in San Francisco and raised in Connecticut, Carter McLean’s musical journey began at the age of 10 when he discovered a passion for drumming. Working at Manny’s Music in Manhattan just before 9/11, a twist of fate led him away from his initial aspirations of working with renowned artists like Sting, Peter Gabriel, or Paul Simon. His talent was recognized by Dennis Davis, a veteran of Stevie Wonder’s band, who invited him to perform alongside legendary musician Roy Ayers in Harlem.
McLean’s path continued with a tour alongside Melvin Sparks in 2002, during which he was approached to substitute at the Broadway production of “The Lion King.” This opportunity eventually propelled him to take over a leading role in the hit show by 2011. Beyond his Broadway success, McLean has maintained a hectic schedule of touring, studio work, and teaching. His musical collaborations span a wide array of artists, including Jamie McLean, Greg Holden, Charlie Hunter, Victor Wooten, Anthony Hamilton, and others from Bernie Worrell of Parliament Funkadelic to Shelby Johnson of Prince’s band.
